A Sad Loss

Several of our members have had the Coronavirus and some are still recovering, but sadly, a Past President and well loved member of our club, Peter Orpen, passed away in April from pneumonia, following a Covid19 infection. He was a dedicated Rotarian over many years, brought great energy to his role in the club, and improved the lives of many people. Peter was the epitome of what Rotary is about, constantly and quietly seeking ways to positively support those in need at home and abroad, then bringing together various groups to make the impact bigger.

He was a great Rotarian, so very kind and a true gentleman, who worked tirelessly for the International graduate students that Rotary clubs sponsor. Peter would encourage them in their charitable aims, then introduce them to our club members, so that we might understand, respect and support them. He had been chairman of the International Committee for many years, the duty of which he absolutely loved and through which he made friends all over the world. He was a great advocate of international friendship and really cared for those in the world less fortunate than himself, showing genuine compassion, and getting involved in many projects to put that caring into practice.

We are all devastated by the loss. He will be much missed. This lovely tribute below was written by his daughter and published in a local magazine, The Hovarian. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family; Peter, may you Rest In Peace.
