Bags for the homeless appeal

Do you like sewing and would you like to help the homeless this Christmas?

If so, Rotary in Brighton and Hove in collaboration with Brighton Emmaus needs your help to make 100 draw strings bags to give out to the Homeless in the City.
The Bags will contain some welcome essentials, along with a small personal gift to hopefully make life on the street just a little more bearable in the depths of winter. Emmaus Brighton & Hove can provide the fabric to make these bags, but we really need your help to make them.Bags need to be approximately 14” x 14” square in plain fabric. If you have never made a drawstring bag before, there are lots of tutorial’s available on the web, just search ‘How to make a draw string bag’.

Rotarian, Jane Thomson, managing this project, says: “My niece gave out a few rucksacks last Christmas and I was so inspired by her initiative I asked our members to support it this winter. We do need some other things though – wetwipes, chocolate etc., which we are asking you all to donate as well. The full list is set out below.”

We need the following to fill the bags:

Men’s

  • Toothbrush
  • Tooth paste
  • Razors
  • Shaving foam
  • Socks
  • Deodorant
  • Wet wipes
  • Chocolate

Women’s

  • Toothbrush
  • Tooth paste
  • Sanitary pads
  • Hairbrush
  • Body spay
  • Deodorant
  • Wet wipes
  • Chocolate

Joel Lewis, Business Manager for Emmaus Brighton, says: “We have set up a collection point at our secondhand superstore in Drove Road, Portslade, BN41 2PA, where these donations can be dropped off. Helping the homeless is the essence of what Emmaus does and this project complements this really well.”

The bags will be given out via the support of local homeless support agencies towards the end of January. The deadline for bags and donated items is 14 January 2017.
