Well over £9,200 raised for local charities.! Our heartfelt thanks to all of you who supported our Christmas Tree collection appeal, making this year our most successful ever.
The past year has been very challenging for all charities and we have been no different, with many of our regular fund-raising events cancelled or postponed pending better times. We were very keen to try to keep the Christmas Tree collection event going, not only for the charities we support, but also as a useful service for the Hove community.
We faced some significant challenges to running the event in line with regulations and Covid security, from leafleting the area to raise awareness to operating the collection itself. We are indebted to our Star Supporter Dean at Jackson Waste, who operated the collection, to Mishon Mackay, our main sponsor, and to the wonderful community groups of Hove who have helped to publicise the event by sharing on social media.
We’d like to thank those of you who booked collections for your patience as we worked out the logistics and teething troubles of collecting the trees in a very different way from previous years. We’d particularly like to apologize to those of you whose collections were delayed. Due to Covid-19 we had to run the service differently this year, which meant there were fewer people collecting. We know our Christmas Tree Collection is a valued service for many Hove residents, but for us it represents about 25% of our fund-raising. Particularly important at a time when our face-to-face fund-raising has taken a big hit.
We had the invaluable support of Dean at Jackson Waste, without which the collection would not have been possible. Dean and his team worked tirelessly over 3 days, working from early morning to late into each evening to make sure that “no trees were left behind”. We were oversubscribed by about 30% and it took longer than we had anticipated, but we got there in the end!
This is the mountain of about 1,000 trees, waiting to be turned into compost or soil improver.
Unlike previous years, when trees that we collected were taken to the various points set up by Brighton & Hove council, all trees from our collection this year will be chipped and composted.
Our Club’s chosen charities, including the Martlets Hospice, Fareshare, Little Green Pig, Sussex Homeless Support, Pelican Parcels and other Rotary supported local projects will all benefit from your generosity this year. Rest assured, we have raised a fantastic amount, 100% of which will go to charity. All of us involved in the Xmas Tree Collection give our time entirely for free. Thank you again, so much, for your fantastic support of this event and we hope you will continue to support Rotary in Brighton & Hove again next year.
